The University of Cape Town and its Department of Information Systems

UCT LogoThe University of Cape Town (UCT) is South Africa's oldest university, and is one of Africa's leading teaching and research institutions. World university rankings such as Times Higher Education (THE) continue to rank UCT as the only university in Africa in the top 200. The university’s strong performance is the direct result of the productivity and impact of UCT’s research, the university’s ability to attract research grants, the quality of its staffing, the international diversity of its staff and students, and the strong perceptions of the quality of its graduates by the international community.

UCT’s mission is to become a premier academic meeting point between South Africa, the rest of Africa and the world. Taking advantage of expanding global networks and its distinct vantage point in Africa, it is committed, through innovative research and scholarship, to grapple with the key issues of our natural and social worlds.

The university is medium-sized in South African terms, with 25,500 students, and a strong focus on research. The beautiful campus backs onto the iconic Table Mountain in Cape Town.

UCT CampusThe Department of Information Systems (IS) forms part of the Commerce Faculty, together with the Schools of Economics and Management Studies, College of Accounting, Department of Finance & Tax, and the Graduate Schools of Business and of Development Policy & Practice.

The University implemented SAP R/3 in 1996 and the IS Department started teaching ERP at the same time. They signed a UCC contract in 2008 and have integrated ERP teaching content into their postgraduate diplomas and undergraduate qualifications.

The Department has a range of staff members with many years of experience and a broad range of technical skills, non-technical skills and research methodology knowledge. Their undergraduate curriculum is well aligned with the IS2010 international standard for Information Systems and the needs of local employers and the vast majority of IS graduates find immediate employment. Their Masters and PhD numbers have grown substantially and they have a growing postgraduate diploma brand.

The Department’s main research thrust is through its research unit, the Centre for Information Technology and National Development (CITANDA). CITANDA’s mission is to be the leading African centre for research into IS in Africa, producing world-class African scholars, and internationally recognised research outputs and postgraduate students.
