In 2003, Nicolas Carr proclaims in his famous article that IT doesn’t matter (www.nicholascarr.com/?page_id=99). He compares IT to technologies like railroad or electrical power, which for early-adopters may hold a rich source of competitive advantage, but over time become commodity. This assertation has been much discussed, has earned criticism and approval, but whether or not you agree with it, most IT service providers are under high cost pressure which motivates them to further standardize and automate their service production.

In our conference paper we present a model which is not so far away from what goes on when you configure and buy your car online. We address the research gap that automated and integrated value creation, as supported by ERP systems, have only been limitedly researched in the context of IT service production. This is striking because companies see it as an important area of improvement.  We present a model of how to automate and integrate an order-to-cash process for providers who offer Software as a Service products. The focus lies on the service provisioning process step and the model is evaluated with a prototype implementation. Our research has implications for researchers and practitioners alike, as it proposes how to more effectively and efficiently deliver IT services, and uses established IS research to do so.
